Which image tool should I use?

How to choose the right tool

Most image jobs come down to three questions. Is there a file size limit? If a form says 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB, use the matching compressor: it saves a JPG and makes the image smaller in pixels rather than letting quality drop below 70%. For any other size, or many photos at once, use the Image Compressor. Are exact pixels required? Resize first, or crop when the shape has to change, then compress. Is the format the problem? PNG photos shrink as JPG, WebP is smallest for websites, and iPhone HEIC photos open anywhere once they are JPG. Signatures and passport photos have their own tools, because they need exact pixels and official sizes as well as a file limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I resize or compress first?

Resize first when a site asks for exact dimensions, then compress. A smaller image needs far fewer bytes, so it can stay sharp at a higher quality setting.

My form says “max 50 KB, 300 × 300 px”. Which tool do I use?

Set the pixels first, then the file size. Crop or resize the image to 300 × 300, then use Compress Image to 50KB with “Reduce dimensions if needed” turned off, so the pixels stay exact and only the quality changes.

Which image formats can I open?

Most image tools open JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (first frame), BMP and AVIF files up to 40 MB, plus HEIC where your browser can decode it, such as Safari. Image to PDF takes all of these except HEIC. Each converter opens only its source format: the JPG converters take JPG, the PNG ones PNG, the WebP ones WebP, and HEIC to JPG takes HEIC.
