How do I make a passport photo at home?

Choose the passport or visa, add a photo taken against a plain light wall, and drag and zoom until your head fits the oval guide. The tool crops it to the official shape and pixel size, and for printed photos makes a 6 × 4 inch sheet with several copies.

  1. Choose the passport or visa you need. The official size, head size and a link to the official rules are shown.
  2. Take a photo in even daylight against a plain, light wall, with your face straight to the camera. Ask someone else to take it from about 1.5 m away.
  3. Add the photo, then drag it and use the zoom until the top of your head touches the top of the oval and your chin its bottom.
  4. Select Create photo. Download the digital file for online applications, or the print sheet to print at 100% on 6 × 4 inch photo paper.

Key features

  • Official sizes, with sources

Each document’s size and head rule comes from its official government page, linked next to the preset.

  • Head position guide

An oval sized to the allowed head height shows where your face should sit, so the crop matches the rules.

  • Digital file and print sheet

Get the exact pixel size for online forms and, where a printed size exists, a 6 × 4 inch sheet with as many copies as fit.

  • Mouse, touch or keyboard

Drag the photo, zoom with the slider, or use the arrow keys and + and − once the frame is selected.

Common uses

  • UK, Netherlands and Canadian passport photos
  • Schengen visa photos in the 35 × 45 mm ICAO format

What this tool can and can’t check

The tool sets the size, shape and crop exactly, and helps you place your head at the right height. It can’t judge your expression, lighting, shadows, glasses or background colour, and it doesn’t replace the background. Read the official rules (linked in the tool and listed under Sources below) before you submit, because a photo that is rejected can delay your application.

Only documents whose rules we could check on an official government page are listed. More will be added as their sizes are verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I print the photos myself?

Yes. Print the sheet at 100%, without “fit to page” or borderless scaling, on 6 × 4 inch (10 × 15 cm) photo paper, then cut along the grey lines. Check one photo with a ruler: it should match the size shown for your document.

Does the tool remove the background?

No. Take the photo against a plain, light-coloured wall instead. That gives a more natural result than cutting out a background, which many passport offices don’t allow.

Why isn’t my country listed?

We only add documents whose sizes we could confirm on an official government page. If your country’s rules match one listed, such as 35 × 45 mm, you can use that preset, but check the official requirements first.

Why is my photo soft?

If you zoom in a long way on a small photo, there aren’t enough pixels for the photo size, and the tool warns you. Take the photo a little closer, in good light, and zoom less.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
