Why is my PNG larger than the JPG?
PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression, while JPG discards detail to save space. For photos, a PNG is typically 3–10 times larger. That’s expected.
Does converting to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG’s pixels. It simply won’t lose more quality when edited and saved again.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. JPG images have no transparency, so the converted PNG keeps the original background.

Should you convert JPG to PNG?
Converting to PNG doesn’t restore detail that JPG compression already removed, and the PNG file is usually several times larger. It’s worth doing when you need lossless editing, when a website or app requires PNG, or when you plan to add sharp text or graphics on top of the image.
A PNG made from a JPG won’t have a transparent background. To remove a background you need an image editor that can cut out the subject.
