How much smaller is a photo saved as JPG?
Saved as PNG, a 12-megapixel photo taken on an iPhone 14 (4032 × 3024 pixels, 3.7 MB) is 24.5 MB. Converting that PNG to JPG at the default 92% quality gave a 3.4 MB file in Chrome, 86% smaller, at the same 4032 × 3024 pixels.
When to keep PNG instead
JPG is ideal for photos. For logos, icons, diagrams and screenshots with small text, JPG compression can cause blurry edges and halos. Keep those as PNG, or use high quality (95% or more) if you must convert.
If you need transparency, don’t convert to JPG, because JPG can’t store it. WebP supports both transparency and small file sizes. The PNG to WebP converter keeps transparency and makes the file smaller.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?
JPG doesn’t support transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you pick. White is the default.
What quality should I choose?
The default 92% keeps photos looking the same as the PNG while making them much smaller. 80–85% gives smaller files that are still hard to tell apart on screen. For screenshots with small text, use 95% or more.
Why is my JPG bigger than the PNG?
This can happen with simple graphics that have few colours, such as logos, which PNG stores very efficiently. Keep those images as PNG.
