Add Background Color to Image
Fill the transparent background of a PNG or WebP with white, black or any colour, and save it as PNG, JPG or WebP. This fills transparency; it doesn’t remove an existing background.

How do I add a background colour to a transparent image?
Choose a PNG or WebP with a transparent background, then pick white, black or any colour to put behind it, and save it as PNG, JPG or WebP. The transparent areas are filled with the colour, and semi-transparent edges blend into it smoothly, as they would in a design app.
- Select or drop an image with transparent areas, such as a PNG logo or product cut-out.
- Choose white, black or a custom colour; you can also paste a HEX code, for example one copied from the Image Color Picker. The preview shows the result straight away.
- Select the output format if needed, then “Apply background” and download.
Key features
Any background colour
White, black or any colour you choose. Soft, semi-transparent edges blend into it, as in a design app.
Tells you when there’s nothing to fill
An image without transparent areas is pointed out: its background is part of the picture, and this tool doesn’t remove backgrounds.
Common uses
- Put a transparent logo on white for a document or marketplace listing
- Give a product cut-out a brand-coloured background
- Prepare a transparent PNG for a site that only accepts JPG
Supported formats and limits
- Works best with
- PNG and WebP with transparency (also GIF, AVIF and BMP with an alpha channel)
- Output
- Same as original, PNG, JPG or WebP
Filling transparency is not background removal
This tool colours the parts of an image that are already transparent. A photo of a person against a wall has no transparent areas, so its background can’t be changed this way; it first needs to be cut out, which requires a background-removal tool.
What happens to soft edges
Each pixel is laid over the colour in proportion to its opacity: new value = background × (1 − opacity) + pixel × opacity, for red, green and blue. A black edge pixel at 50% opacity (alpha 128 of 255) on white becomes 255 × (1 − 128 ÷ 255) = 127 in every channel: rgb(127, 127, 127), or #7F7F7F, a mid-grey that smooths the step from the black logo to the white page. On a black background the same pixel stays black.
If a cut-out was made against white, its edge pixels may already contain some white, which shows as a light fringe on a dark colour. Check the preview at full size before you save.
This tool or PNG to JPG?
Both fill transparency in the same way. Use this tool for one image when you want to type an exact HEX colour, see the result before saving, or keep the file as PNG or WebP with a solid background. Use PNG to JPG when you have up to 30 PNGs that all need a white, black or custom background and a JPG is what you want at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a transparent PNG white instead?
Open it here, keep White selected and save it. The transparent areas become white, and you can keep PNG or save as JPG.
Can this remove the background from a photo?
No. It only fills areas that are already transparent. A photo’s background is part of the picture and stays as it is.
