PNG to WebP Converter
Convert PNG images to WebP for faster websites. WebP keeps transparency and is usually much smaller than PNG. Choose the quality and convert several files at once.
Runs in your browser. Your data is not uploaded. How our tools work
90% keeps text and sharp edges clean. Lower it for photos to save more. Transparency is kept at every setting.
How do I convert PNG to WebP?
Set the WebP quality (90% keeps text and edges clean), then select or drop your PNG files. Each one is converted to WebP in your browser with its transparency kept, and the real size change is shown for every file. Safari, and most browsers on iPhone and iPad, can’t create WebP, so convert on a computer or an Android phone.
- Set the WebP quality. 90% suits logos, screenshots and graphics; 75–85% saves more on photos.
- Select or drop one or more PNG files. Each one is converted as soon as it is added, with its size before and after.
Key features
Transparency kept
Transparent backgrounds stay transparent, unlike a conversion to JPG.
Real size change shown
Every file shows its size before and after. If a WebP comes out larger, you see that too, and can keep the PNG.
Batch conversion and ZIP
Convert up to 30 PNGs at once and download them all as one ZIP file.
Common uses
- Make logos, icons and screenshots load faster on a website
- Shrink transparent product images for an online shop
- Prepare images for a CMS or site builder that accepts WebP
Supported formats and limits
- Input
- PNG (with or without transparency), up to 40 MB each
- Output
- WebP with transparency, quality 50–100% (lossy; at 100% Chrome saves a lossless WebP)
- Browsers
- Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other browsers that can save WebP. Safari, and most browsers on iPhone and iPad, can’t create WebP files
How much smaller is a PNG photo as WebP?
Saved as PNG, a 12-megapixel photo taken on an iPhone 14 (4032 × 3024 pixels, 3.7 MB) is 24.5 MB. Converting that PNG at the default 90% quality gave a 2.5 MB WebP in Chrome, 90% smaller, at the same 4032 × 3024 pixels.
Is WebP always smaller than PNG?
For photos and detailed graphics, usually by a wide margin. Google’s comparison found lossy WebP with transparency about three times smaller than PNG. For tiny icons or images with only a few flat colours, PNG can already be very compact, and the WebP may save little or even come out larger. The tool shows the actual result, so you can decide file by file.
The WebP is saved with lossy compression. At 90% or more the difference is hard to see, but for pixel-exact artwork, keep the PNG.
Three kinds of PNG, measured
We converted three PNGs made for the test with this tool in Chrome on 7 October 2026. The savings depend on what is in the image, and 100% isn’t “a bit better than 90%”: Chrome switches to lossless WebP there, which keeps every pixel and costs far more bytes.
- Website banner, 1200 × 800, gradient and texture: 1.3 MB as PNG, 95.9 KB at 90% (93% smaller), 348 KB at 100%.
- Logo, 600 × 600, transparent background: 24.3 KB as PNG, 10.3 KB at 90% (58% smaller), 20.0 KB at 100%. Its transparent corners stayed fully transparent at 75%, 90% and 100%.
- Screenshot of a web page, 1280 × 800: 131 KB as PNG, 81.3 KB at 90% (38% smaller), 191 KB at 100%, 46% larger than the PNG.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does PNG to WebP keep transparency?
Yes. WebP supports transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent areas stay transparent.
Can I convert without losing any quality?
Yes: set the quality to 100%, where Chrome saves a lossless WebP whose pixels match the PNG exactly. Expect a much larger file than at 90%; the test screenshot came out bigger than its PNG. Keep the PNG as your editing copy either way.
What quality should I choose?
90% keeps text and sharp edges clean in screenshots and logos. For photos saved as PNG, 75–85% gives much smaller files with little visible difference.
Why can’t I convert on my iPhone?
Safari can show WebP images but can’t create them, and most browsers on iPhone and iPad use Safari’s engine. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer or an Android phone.
Why did one file get bigger?
Very simple images with few colours are already small as PNG. When the WebP comes out larger, its row is marked “larger”; keep the PNG for that image.
