Time Duration Calculator

Enter a start and end time to see the duration in hours and minutes, decimal hours and total minutes. Times past midnight count as the next day, and a break can be subtracted.

If the end time is earlier than the start time, it is counted as the next day, as for a night shift.

Note:
Enter a start and an end time to see how long it is.

How do I calculate the time between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time: from 09:30 to 17:45 is 8 hours 15 minutes, or 8.25 hours. When the end is earlier than the start, the calculator counts it as the next day, so 22:00 to 02:00 is 4 hours. You can also subtract an unpaid break.

  1. Enter the start time and the end time.
  2. Optionally, enter a break in minutes to subtract, such as a 30-minute lunch.
  3. Read the duration in hours and minutes, as decimal hours for timesheets, and in total minutes.

Formulas & Methods

Same day

end − start

Example: 17:45 − 09:30 = 8 h 15 min = 495 min

Past midnight

end + 24 h − start

Example: 02:00 + 24:00 − 22:00 = 4 h

Decimal hours

total minutes ÷ 60

Example: 495 ÷ 60 = 8.25 h

Key features

  • Overnight shifts

An end time earlier than the start time is counted as the next day, and the result says so.

  • Breaks

Subtract an unpaid break in minutes to get the time actually worked.

  • Several shifts

Add up to 14 shifts for a week’s or a fortnight’s timesheet, each with its own break and overnight handling.

  • Pay for the hours

With more than one shift, add an hourly rate to see the pay for the total hours, before tax.

  • Timesheet-ready

Get the duration as hours and minutes, decimal hours and total minutes.

  • Your clock format

Times are entered with your device’s time picker, in 12-hour or 24-hour format.

Example: a week on a timesheet

Add each day as a shift with its unpaid break, and the calculator adds up the decimal hours for you. Decimal hours add up cleanly; hours and minutes don’t.

  • Monday 08:45 to 17:30, 30-minute break: 8.25 hours
  • Tuesday 09:00 to 17:00, 30-minute break: 7.5 hours
  • Wednesday 09:00 to 17:30, 30-minute break: 8 hours
  • Thursday 08:30 to 17:30, 30-minute break: 8.5 hours
  • Friday 09:00 to 16:15, 30-minute break: 6.75 hours
  • Week: 8.25 + 7.5 + 8 + 8.5 + 6.75 = 39 hours

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the break be longer than the shift?

No. A break longer than the time between the start and end is rejected with a message, because the time worked can’t be negative. Enter the break in whole minutes, not hours: a one-hour lunch is 60.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide by 60. 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25 hours, and 7 hours 40 minutes is about 7.67 hours.

What if the start and end are the same?

The duration is 0. A span of a full day, from one time to the same time the next day, is 24 hours.

Can it add up several shifts or days?

Yes. Select “Add another shift” for each day, up to 14 shifts, and the total appears in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. Each shift can cross midnight and has its own break.
