How do I make a URL slug from a title?

Type or paste a title and it becomes a URL slug straight away: “Free Image Compressor Online” becomes free-image-compressor-online. Punctuation and emoji are removed, spaces become hyphens or underscores, and accents are simplified, so café becomes cafe. Arabic, Urdu, Chinese and other scripts are kept unless you choose ASCII only.

Key features

  • Clean, readable slugs

Lowercase words joined by hyphens, with punctuation, symbols and emoji removed and no double or trailing hyphens.

  • Accents simplified

é, ü, ß, ø and similar letters become e, u, ss and o, so the slug works everywhere.

  • Other scripts kept

Arabic, Urdu, Chinese, Hindi and other scripts stay in the slug by default. Choose ASCII only to keep just a–z and digits.

  • Shorter slugs

Remove short words such as “the” and “and”, or cut the slug to a maximum length at a word boundary.

  • Many at once

Paste a list of titles to get one slug per line.

Common uses

  • Turn a list of titles into file names
  • Clean up links for a CMS or static site

Example: what each option does to one title

Take the title “Crème Brûlée: The ‘Best’ Recipe for 2026!”. The options change it step by step:

  • Defaults: creme-brulee-the-best-recipe-for-2026. Accents are simplified, the colon, quotes and exclamation mark are removed, and words are joined with hyphens.
  • Remove short words: creme-brulee-best-recipe-2026. “the” and “for” are dropped; a short word is never removed if it would leave the slug empty.
  • Maximum length 20: creme-brulee-best. The slug is cut at the last hyphen before the limit, never in the middle of a word.
  • ASCII only on “Lahore کے بہترین پارک”: lahore. The Urdu words are kept by default (lahore-کے-بہترین-پارک) and dropped only with this option, so check the result still makes sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a URL slug?

The readable part of a web address that identifies a page, such as compress-image-to-50kb in vektratool.com/image-tools/compress-image-to-50kb.

Should I use hyphens or underscores?

Hyphens. Search engines read hyphens as word separators, while underscores can join words together. Use underscores only where a system requires them.

What happens to non-English titles?

Accented Latin letters are simplified. Other scripts, such as Arabic or Chinese, are kept, which modern browsers and search engines support. When such a link is copied into an email or chat it often turns into long %-codes, so choose ASCII only if that matters or your system needs plain a–z.

Should I remove words like “the” and “and”?

It can make slugs shorter, but it’s optional. Keep them if the slug reads badly without them.
