How do I calculate the average of a list of numbers?

The average, or arithmetic mean, is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are: 10, 20, 30 and 40 add up to 100, and 100 ÷ 4 = 25. Paste or type your numbers, separated by commas, spaces or new lines, to see the average with the sum, count, median, mode and range.

Formulas & Methods

Average (mean)

sum of the values ÷ number of values

Example: (10 + 20 + 30 + 40) ÷ 4 = 100 ÷ 4 = 25

Median

the middle value once sorted; with an even count, the mean of the two middle values

Example: 1, 3, 7, 20: (3 + 7) ÷ 2 = 5

Mode

the value or values that appear most often; none when all appear equally often

Example: 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4: modes 2 and 3

Range

largest value − smallest value

Example: 4 − 1 = 3

Key features

  • Mean, median, mode and range

See the average, sum, count, median, mode, range, smallest and largest value together.

  • Paste from anywhere

Numbers can be separated by commas, semicolons, spaces, tabs or new lines, so columns copied from a spreadsheet work.

Mean or median?

The mean uses every value, so one very large or small value pulls it strongly. The median is the middle value and ignores how far the extremes are. If five flats on a street sold for 210,000, 225,000, 230,000, 240,000 and 1,200,000, the mean is 421,000, higher than four of the five prices, while the median is 230,000. Without the 1,200,000 sale the mean would be 226,250.

Use the median for a typical value when a few values are far from the rest, as with house prices or salaries, or delivery times that include one parcel held up for weeks. Use the mean when every value should count in full, such as total spending shared out per day, or marks that are averaged by the rules of a course. When the two are far apart, report both, or check the outliers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no mode?

Because no value appears more often than the others. In 1, 2, 3 every value appears once, and in 1, 1, 2, 2 every value appears twice, so neither list has a mode. In 2, 3, 3, 5 the mode is 3.

Can I include negative numbers and decimals?

Yes. Write negative numbers with a minus sign, such as −4 or -4, and decimals with a point, such as 2.75.

Why is 1,000 counted as two numbers?

Commas separate numbers in the list, so 1,000 reads as 1 and 000. Write one thousand as 1000, without a comma. The calculator points this out when it happens.
